Sudbury Police Interview of Steve Riess (2019-07-02)
Synopsis
Steve Riess is Ricky Riess's father. Ricky Riess is the person US DHS accused me of being and deported me to Canada as.
In 2019, in an attempt to prove I am Ricky Riess from Ontario, Canada, the BC Prosecution Service had the Sudbury Police (where Steve Riess lives) interview Riess to try to get evidence to prove I'm his son, Ricky Riess. This is that interview.
Of course, a simple DNA test would resolve the issue, conclusively, once and for all, but the BC prosecutors, the RCMP, CBSA, and US DHS all refuse to accept Riess's offer to do a DNA test - likely because that would definitively prove I am not Ricky Riess from Ontario, that the US deported me illegally.
In this interview, Riess starts out by positively identifying me (from my mugshot) as being his son Ricky Riess. I believe he was under the impression that's all he was there to do, because when the detective started asking follow-up questions, Riess became very agitated and flustered. And as the interview progresses:
Riess claims he has no photographs of his son and the only photos he has of me are what he's received from Desiree and the news media;
Riess claims he does not know any of the schools his son attended;
Riess claims he has not seen his son in about twenty years, and rarely saw him before that;
Riess repeatedly expresses significant dislike of me and of the US;
Riess admits all his information about me has come from Desiree and from what he's seen in the news;
Riess says he has pictures of me, on a USB drive, going back about twenty years - so around the time I met Desiree - but he has nothing from before that;
Riess admits to illegally providing his son's birth certificate to Desiree, to help her get me deported from the US to Canada;
it becomes clear that he completely and blindly accepts everything Desiree tells him, without question, even when the physical evidence proves otherwise.
Throughout the interview, Riess also repeatedly states all I had to do was "walk away", just never talk to Desiree again, and she'd be happy with that - with absolutely no regard to the harm and damage Desiree has caused, and continues to cause to mine and our son's lives.

Scaglione:
Okay.
172.
Riess:
(Chuckle).
173.
Scaglione:
So you went to Toronto and then what happened after that?
174.
Riess:
Ah then I split up with ah, with my ex and ah she kept the kids and I moved back to Sudbury.
175.
Scaglione:

Riess proving what a horrible parent he is
191.
Scaglione:
Okay. And, um, so from that time did you speak to him often, or seldomly?
192.
Riess:
Off and on. He stopped in to see me one time, was ah travelling from B.C. to the states somewhere and he went around through Sudbury,
he was going to stay for a couple of days and it ended up being about two or three months you know. I finally said hey, it's time to get on with your life you know ah?
193.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
194.
Riess:
Ah, I'm not going to support you because I just ah, you know I've been alone so long I'm not looking to raise a kid anymore. He was already early twenties by that time and...
195.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
Video Clip:
Riess claims his son put a virus on his computer, says that's the kind of vindictive guy his son is
196.
Riess:
...so he put a virus in my computer and left. 'Cause when I turned it on it went (mouth noise) and that was it.
197.
Scaglione:
Oh you're kidding?
198.
Riess:
Yeah, and ah that's the kind of vindictive guy he is. I heard he did the same thing to his mom when he stopped to see her in Toronto and, but that's just the kind of guy he is.
199.
Scaglione:
Yeah. Um, what about before that? Did you see him often or?
200.
Riess:
I seen him once when he was ah, about fourteen, fifteen? And we tried to put a relationship together but we didn't know each other from a hole in the ground so...
201.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
202.
Riess:
...we couldn't make a, a, a personal connection.
203.
Scaglione:
Okay. And what, why was the reason for that, just...
204.
Riess:
Well...
205.
Scaglione:
...raised differently? Or...
206.
Riess:
...his, his, his mom told him all kind of stories and lies about me, and I tried to tell him like you know she made them up just to turn my kids against me and, and he didn't really believe it and that's where we left it.
207.
Scaglione:
Yeah. Um, so custody stuff back then like how come she had full custody? Is it because she (indecipherable)?
208.
Riess:
Because I was stupid.
209.
Scaglione:
Okay was, was.
210.
Riess:
I was young and stupid and didn't know...
211.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
212.
Riess:
...any better and...
213.
Scaglione:
Okay.
214.
Riess:
...I regretted that the rest of my life.
215.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
216.
Riess:
But you know what? Life goes on.
Video Clip:
Riess admits he's been maintaining a relationship with Desiree for a long time and she has been his source of information about me
217.
Scaglione:
You mentioned um USB, so what, what would be on that?
218.
Riess:
Uh, well it, it's emails and between me and him, and between, somewhere in here there should be a memory stick. Between me and him and ah, ah me and his ex-wife, ah, photographs that she sent me and stuff like that.
219.
Scaglione:
What kind of photographs?
220.
Riess:
'Cause, um of her and Richard and ah their son Gabriel and.
221.
Scaglione:
Oh okay, just to keep you in the loop about what was going on?
222.
Riess:
Yeah, yeah.
223.
Scaglione:
Okay.
224.
Riess:
And when ah, when I downloaded it all onto the stick it was all in order, and now it's all mixed up.
225.
Scaglione:
Yeah, (indecipherable).
226.
Riess:
I don't know how, I don't know why, I'm not a computer guy.
Video Clip:
Riess falsely claims his son came to visit 15 - 20 years ago for his son's non-existent niece's wedding
227.
Scaglione:
Yeah, I'm not either. No worries there. Um, okay so at fifteen you would have seen him and then after that you would have seen him early twenties, and when did you see him after that?
228.
Riess:
I, um, oh he came up for um, for his niece's wedding. And that was probably fifteen, twenty years ago.
I haven't seen him in a lot of years.
229.
Scaglione:
Really eh?
230.
Riess:
That's a good thing (chuckle, knocks on wooden table).
231.
Scaglione:
Yeah, yeah. So, so that would have been the last time you saw him?
232.
Riess:
Yes.
233.
Scaglione:
Okay you haven't seen him since then?
234.
Riess:
No.
235.
Scaglione:
So about twenty years.
Video Clip:
Riess says Fox has been attacking Desiree for many, many, many years
236.
Riess:
I talked to him ah when I sent Desiree his ah birth certificate,
'cause she's been fighting this for many, I don't know how much of this story you know but she's been fighting...
237.
Scaglione:
No.
238.
Riess:
...with him for years. He's tried to ah drive her crazy, he had a website, out ah just saying all kinds of bad things about her, and, and he, he was in Courtney or, or whatever and he said that he would ah do everything he could to drive her crazy so she'd kill herself. The story goes on for ye, many, many, many, many years and.
239.
Scaglione:
Do you still um talk to his ex, Desiree?
240.
Riess:
Yes.
241.
Scaglione:
Yeah, you still talk to her.
242.
Riess:
When I talked to Kirsty BROWN I sent her an email telling her that ah, I told Kirsty that she could get a hold of her to get, to get his birth certificate or a copy of it. And she emailed me back, said yes Kirsty had got a hold of her and.
243.
Scaglione:
Awesome. Great, great. Um, does he keep in contact with his sister?
244.
Riess:
I have no clue.
245.
Scaglione:
You have no clue eh?
246.
Riess:
No.
Video Clip:
Riess talks about my telephone conversation with him in 2012
247.
Scaglione:
Okay. And when's the last time you actually spoke with um, through emails or any other ways?
248.
Riess:
To him?
249.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
250.
Riess:
Last time I talked to him is when I, I sent Desiree his birth certificate, and he called me and asked me why I was ah taking her side? And I said it's not about sides, I says you're, you're vindictive and all you want to do is hurt people. I says it's, it's time for you to wake up and turn your life around you know? He's very intelligent ah guy, he's, is go- got a lot of computer smarts that I'll never have and, and he's wasting them trying to hurt people.
251.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
252.
Riess:
Yeah and, and to me it doesn't make sense.
253.
Scaglione:
Do you remember when that was?
254.
Riess:
(Mouth noise).
255.
Scaglione:
That last email?
256.
Riess:
Oh I'm going to say ah well the last, that wasn't even, that was a phone call.
257.
Scaglione:
That was a phone call, okay.
258.
Riess:
Yeah, and that was probably ten years ago.
259.
Scaglione:
Oh wow.
260.
Riess:
Eight or ten years ago.
261.
Scaglione:
What about ah, do you talk to him in any other ways other than...
262.
Riess:
No.
263.
Scaglione:
...on the phone?
264.
Riess:
No. Well, I've had a few emails over the years which, which are on there, but we were never ever close.
265.
Scaglione:
No eh? Okay.
266.
Riess:
No.
Video Clip:
Riess saying I am so full of "BS" you can't believe anything I say
267.
Scaglione:
Um, is there anyone else that he keeps contact with that you know? Any friends? Ah...
268.
Riess:
Not around here...
269.
Scaglione:
...(indecipherable)?
270.
Riess:
...that I know of, no. 'Cause I was never close with him so I don't know a lot about his life.
271.
Scaglione:
Mm hmm.
272.
Riess:
I only know what he said and ah, and I think he's so full of B.S. that you can't believe every- anything he says.
273.
Scaglione:
Yeah. What about video chats or anything like that? Nothing?
274.
Riess:
Don't know how to do them.
275.
Scaglione:
Okay. Yeah, no fair enough.
Video Clip:
I hate idiots that say they don't own a cell phone because people kept calling them, so they got rid of it
276.
Riess:
I don't know much about computers, I don't want to, I don't even own a cell phone.
277.
Scaglione:
Oh no, eh?
278.
Riess:
Don't...
279.
Scaglione:
That's your home phone?
280.
Riess:
...that's my home phone, yeah.
281.
Scaglione:
Yeah, (inaudible).
282.
Riess:
Don't ah, I used to have a cell phone and it started getting to the point where you couldn't do anything without that phone ringing.
283.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
284.
Riess:
You can't drive, you can't go to movie, you can't go to restaurant, you can't do anything.
285.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
286.
Riess:
I just got rid of it.
287.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
288.
Riess:
I said there, now bug me.
289.
Scaglione:
(Chuckle).
290.
Riess:
Leave me alone.
Video Clip:
Riess admits he has absolutely no documents relating to "his son" or to me, other than what Desiree has provided him
291.
Scaglione:
Um, what about ah, you wouldn't have any other documents as far as like, like a, an old health card or...
292.
Riess:
No.
293.
Scaglione:
...driver's license or anything like that eh that he, he would ah?
294.
Riess:
I got, I only ah had his birth certificate and I sent that to Desiree.
295.
Scaglione:
Okay.
296.
Riess:
And ah other than that I have no documents at all.
297.
Scaglione:
Okay. Okay. Um.
Video Clip:
Riess offers to provide a DNA sample to prove I am his son
298.
Riess:
I have DNA (chuckle) that I can't lose.
299.
Scaglione:
Okay, for, for what reason?
300.
Riess:
Well, 'cause he says he's not my son.
301.
Scaglione:
Right.
302.
Riess:
He says he was born in Sudbury, California instead of Sudbury, Ontario and.
303.
Scaglione:
Right, yeah, yeah.
304.
Riess:
He's got a whole list of things.
305.
Scaglione:
Yeah, yeah.
306.
Riess:
But, if they need positive proof that he's my son that doesn't lie.
307.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
308.
Riess:
I watch TV shows eh (chuckle).
309.
Scaglione:
Yeah (chuckle). Great.
310.
Riess:
So I've offered that a few times but nobody's ever ah, taken it that far yet.
311.
Scaglione:
Yeah, no worries. Um, last time you saw him did he look any different than that picture?
312.
Riess:
He looks older. He never had the beard, he never had the white hair but he still looks basically the same.
313.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
314.
Riess:
Yeah if you go through the stick you'll see there's pictures of him, it's the same guy only he's getting older.
315.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
316.
Riess:
As we all are.
317.
Scaglione:
Did um, sorry you said and the USB, what are we going to find you said? Some, some emails?
318.
Riess:
Emails, ah mostly between Desiree and I but some between Richard and I.
319.
Scaglione:
Okay.
320.
Riess:
And some pictures and pictures of, of him and Desiree and ah Gabriel when he was a baby ah...
321.
Scaglione:
Okay.
Video Clip:
Riess says I stole the identity of a jail guard - he knows it to be so because Desiree told him!
322.
Riess:
...things like that. Ah some ah news clippings about when he was in jail in the States
and, he's, he calls himself Patrick Henry FOX.
323.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
324.
Riess:
Do you know where that name came from?
325.
Scaglione:
No, no. (Indecipherable).
326.
Riess:
That was a jail guard in the States when he was, when he was in ah, in jail. That was one of the guards. Just took his identity, made it his own.
327.
Scaglione:
Oh I see what you're saying, okay. Like a jail guard.
328.
Riess:
So the jail guard was Patrick Henry FOX...
329.
Scaglione:
Right.
330.
Riess:
...so now he's Patrick Henry FOX.
331.
Scaglione:
And ah how did you know that?
332.
Riess:
Desiree told me that.
333.
Scaglione:
Oh okay.
334.
Riess:
Because she's been right in the middle of this ever since ah, they met. She's stuck right in the middle, they were married for a year and got divorced and, and he's made her life a living hell ever since.
335.
Scaglione:
How long were they together prior to?
336.
Riess:
Um, they were married about a year.
337.
Scaglione:
Okay, and what about prior to that (indecipherable)?
338.
Riess:
Don't know.
339.
Scaglione:
Don't know.
340.
Riess:
Don't know.
341.
Scaglione:
Okay. How did you get in contact with Desiree?
342.
Riess:
She got in contact with me.
343.
Scaglione:
Oh really?
344.
Riess:
Yeah.
345.
Scaglione:
'Cause I mean at that point you guys weren't really talking right?
346.
Riess:
I've never ever met her.
347.
Scaglione:
Okay what about him though? You, you guys weren't really talking at that time.
348.
Riess:
We never ever really had a relationship.
349.
Scaglione:
No.
350.
Riess:
But she wanted to know her in-laws and she wanted me to know my grandson and ah.
351.
Scaglione:
Yeah that's nice.
352.
Riess:
It was. And she sort of kept me in the loop over the years and I've helped her whenever I could and, that's why I'm here now is to try to help her.
353.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
Video Clip:
Riess says all I have to do is walk away, leave Desiree alone!
354.
Riess:
You know all he's got to do is just leave her alone, walk away. That's all he's got to do.
355.
Scaglione:
Exactly.
356.
Riess:
But that's not good enough for him.
357.
Scaglione:
No.
358.
Riess:
He's got to make her life a, a, a miserable living hell until the day she dies.
359.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
360.
Riess:
And nobody wants to live that way.
361.
Scaglione:
No.
362.
Riess:
Not me, not you, not nobody.
363.
Scaglione:
Exactly. Um, you, you mentioned a middle name, what's his middle name?
364.
Riess:
Ah Steve.
365.
Scaglione:
Okay, middle name is Steve?
Video Clip:
Riess saying I changed my name from Ricky to Richard but that it's really Ricky
366.
Riess:
His name is Ricky Steve.
367.
Scaglione:
Ricky Steve, okay.
368.
Riess:
Yeah.
369.
Scaglione:
Is it Ricky or is it?
370.
Riess:
It's not Richard, it's Ricky...
371.
Scaglione:
Ricky.
372.
Riess:
...he changed it to Richard.
373.
Scaglione:
Oh okay.
374.
Riess:
But it's Ricky.
375.
Scaglione:
Okay, was there a reason why that ah, you gave him that name?
376.
Riess:
'Cause I was young and stupid (chuckle).
377.
Scaglione:
(Indecipherable).
378.
Riess:
And I thought Ricky was cool back then.
379.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
380.
Riess:
Don't forget I got married at eighteen. I got divorced at twenty-three.
381.
Scaglione:
I can imagine (chuckle).
382.
Riess:
(Chuckle). I did a lot of stupid foolish things when I was younger...
383.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
384.
Riess:
...you know, that you can't change.
385.
Scaglione:
Yeah. But I mean was it ah, like Ricky back then and is there a significance to that name or?
386.
Riess:
No. Just, just picked a name.
387.
Scaglione:
Yeah, okay. Do you remember like obviously you consulted with your significant other at the time...
388.
Riess:
Mm hmm.
389.
Scaglione:
...about the name in, in?
390.
Riess:
Yeah we, we had no problems. We had, you know first you, you got to find a name. You're all excited to, you're going to have a baby well you got to give him a name and.
391.
Scaglione:
Okay.
392.
Riess:
And so we agreed on Ricky, and ga- gave him my ah, my name as his middle name.
393.
Scaglione:
You name as his middle name, okay.
394.
Riess:
See and, and my name is actually Steven John but I call myself Steve...
395.
Scaglione:
Yeah, yeah.
396.
Riess:
...(indecipherable).
397.
Scaglione:
No fair enough.
398.
Riess:
It's no, no big shock to me that he didn't like Rick, Ricky so he changed it to Richard.
399.
Scaglione:
Yeah, okay. St. Jo's, was born St. Joseph General Hospital?
400.
Riess:
Well, well it was Sudbury General, St. Jo's used to be downtown and then the two hospitals moved together, but that's where he was born.
401.
Scaglione:
Okay.
402.
Riess:
You've been up Paris Street? You seen that big...
403.
Scaglione:
I, no I've been there.
404.
Riess:
...big vacant building.
405.
Scaglione:
I'm assuming that ah when I was actually in, in (indecipherable).
406.
Riess:
Well there you go...
407.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
408.
Riess:
...see you knew all about it (chuckle).
409.
Scaglione:
Yeah. It's just like I said like people are going to be...
410.
Riess:
Yeah.
411.
Scaglione:
...ah looking at this video and they're not going to know where that is.
412.
Riess:
But if they ask you you're going to know.
413.
Scaglione:
But I won't be there right?
414.
Riess:
Nah, yeah, yeah....
415.
Scaglione:
They're just going to put this on, on the video right...
416.
Riess:
...okay.
Video Clip:
Riess expresses concern that one day I'm going to turn all that hate toward him
417.
Scaglione:
...that they see. Yeah, so, um, all right, is there anything else that I should know as far as your relationship with him within the last twenty years or so?
418.
Riess:
The less I see of him the better.
419.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
420.
Riess:
Like I say he's just, he just wants to hurt people. Anybody he knows ends up getting hurt and, and I'm glad I'm on the outs.
421.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
422.
Riess:
And I always think that well some day he's going to turn all that hate towards me and I'll have to deal with that at that time, but.
423.
Scaglione:
What makes you say that?
424.
Riess:
Just intuition because everybody he's been close wit- close with eventually sooner or later he's turned around and done some- something mean to them for no reason. Like how he blames me and his mom because he had a bad childhood well I wasn't even there, okay well that's why, well I don't know how he thinks...
425.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
426.
Riess:
...but.
427.
Scaglione:
Have you ever had a conversation with him about that?
428.
Riess:
Not really.
429.
Scaglione:
No.
430.
Riess:
No.
431.
Scaglione:
Um, when would have been the last time he reached out to you?
432.
Riess:
When he phoned me to find out why I gave Desiree his ah birth certificate.
433.
Scaglione:
And how long ago was that?
434.
Riess:
About ten years.
435.
Scaglione:
Ten years.
436.
Riess:
Give or take a couple of years.
Video Clip:
Riess admits to conspiring with Desiree to get me deported to Canada as retaliation
437.
Scaglione:
How come she wanted to know that at that time?
438.
Riess:
Because he was saying that he was born in the, in the States but he's Canadian, and he's been lying about the whole thing and if she could prove he's Canadian then she can have him deported...
439.
Scaglione:
Okay.
440.
Riess:
...and then he'll leave her alone.
441.
Scaglione:
This was ten years ago though?
442.
Riess:
Oh this has been going on for over twenty years.
443.
Scaglione:
Oh wow.
444.
Riess:
This is a long mess you're getting into (chuckle).
445.
Scaglione:
Okay, I see. I see. Okay.
Video Clip:
Riess again says all I had to do is just leave Desiree alone, just never talk to her again
446.
Riess:
Yeah, this has been going on for many, many, many, many years and he's tried many, many, many different things to, to hurt her and like...
447.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
448.
Riess:
...and all he ever had to do was just close the door and walk away.
449.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
450.
Riess:
Never ever talk to her again and she would have been happy. She never asked him for child support, just leave her alone.
451.
Scaglione:
Mm hmm.
452.
Riess:
And he just can't do it.
And here you are stuck in doing it (chuckle).
453.
Scaglione:
I'm in this now (chuckle).
454.
Riess:
And the plot is thickening and more people are getting drawn into this mess and.
455.
Scaglione:
Mm hmm. So that's the last time you spoke with him eh?
456.
Riess:
What's that?
457.
Scaglione:
That's the last time you spoke with him then...
458.
Riess:
Yeah.
459.
Scaglione:
...at that time?
460.
Riess:
Yeah.
461.
Scaglione:
And he, at that time he reached out to you (inaudible)?
462.
Riess:
No he wanted, he phoned me.
463.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
464.
Riess:
And, and it was a, a long distance number I didn't know so I didn't answer it.
465.
Scaglione:
Right.
466.
Riess:
And then he called ah the private numbers and I wouldn't answer, and then one day I just, without thinking I just picked up the phone and it was him. He said why don't you answer all my phone calls? I said 'cause I don't want to talk to you.
467.
Scaglione:
(Chuckle).
468.
Riess:
Nothing good ever comes of those conversations.
469.
Scaglione:
Yeah. Yeah (inaudible).
470.
Riess:
So. Oh well.
471.
Scaglione:
Is there anything else we should know about it, or?
472.
Riess:
I think that's about it, like I say ah there's a lot of emails on that stick...
473.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
474.
Riess:
...and that will give you a lot of insight into what's actually going on and...
475.
Scaglione:
Okay.
476.
Riess:
...Desiree's reached out to me many times to try to help her, and I get a lot of information from her, and from, from the News when he's ah incarcerated and everything well it makes the news you know?
477.
Scaglione:
Yeah.
478.
Riess:
And they call this, one of them they call him a crazy Canuck trying to say he was an American when they proved already that he was Canadian and, and he's still trying to prove he's an American.
479.
Scaglione:
Mm hmm.
480.
Riess:
Why would he want to live in TRUMP land?
481.
Scaglione:
(Chuckle).
482.
Riess:
I don't know.
483.
Scaglione:
Different reasons I guess eh?
484.
Riess:
Yeah (chuckle).
485.
Scaglione:
Great. Alright, I won't keep you any longer; it's nine-eighteen a.m...
486.
Riess:
Okay.
487.
Scaglione:
...on the second of July, two-thousand nineteen, we'll end interview. I'll just ah step out, close the ah, turn it off and...
